Our Preschool Program: Transition to school

At Little Creators, we support children in their early childhood education journey, helping them move confidently into their next stage of learning through a continuous, relational experience that begins in the earliest years of life.

Transition to school is not a single moment or final year experience. It develops over time through strong relationships, a sense of belonging and everyday experiences that build confidence, identity and a love of learning.

Building strong foundations for learning

We focus on the foundations that are essential for children’s learning, wellbeing and positive transition to school and beyond.

Self-regulation and emotional wellbeing
Children develop the ability to manage emotions, attention and behaviour, supporting engagement in learning, friendships and new environments.

Independence and confidence
Children are supported to make choices, participate in routines and take responsibility for aspects of their day, building resilience and capability.

Social connection
Through play and relationships, children develop communication, empathy, cooperation and the ability to participate in group learning.

Communication and thinking skills
Rich conversations, storytelling and inquiry-based experiences support children to express ideas, think deeply and engage meaningfully with the world.

Literacy and numeracy in everyday learning
Early literacy and numeracy are embedded throughout play and everyday experiences. Children explore counting, symbols, patterns, drawing, storytelling and emergent reading and writing in meaningful, hands-on contexts that reflect their interests. This approach builds strong foundational understandings, language development and positive dispositions toward learning such as curiosity, confidence and engagement.

Research in early childhood education consistently shows that young children learn best through play-based and experiential approaches where literacy and numeracy are embedded in authentic contexts. In these environments, children develop early mathematical thinking and literacy skills as part of meaningful exploration and interaction.

At Little Creators, we prioritise these foundations so children develop confidence, capability and a genuine love of learning that supports their ongoing learning journey.

Play-based learning that builds lifelong learning

Play-based learning provides the strongest foundation for development in the early years. Through play, children develop language, creativity, problem-solving, social understanding and persistence. They also build positive dispositions toward learning, including curiosity, motivation and engagement. Play is where children make sense of the world, test ideas and develop the thinking skills that support lifelong learning success.

Why our preschool program within long day care is beneficial

Our preschool program is embedded within a long day care setting, allowing children to experience a natural, unhurried rhythm of learning across the day.

Unlike short-session preschool models, this structure provides extended, uninterrupted time for play, supporting deep engagement, sustained thinking and meaningful learning. Children are not rushed between structured blocks or early pick-up times, allowing them to fully explore ideas, revisit learning and develop confidence at their own pace.

The continuity of care across the day also supports strong, consistent relationships with educators. These secure relationships create the foundation for children to engage more deeply in their learning across play, group experiences and everyday routines.

Within this extended day, children experience a balanced rhythm of play-based learning, social interaction, rest, routines and caregiving experiences, all of which support holistic development and confidence as learners.

This approach ensures that preschool learning is not confined to a set time block, but embedded throughout the entire day in meaningful, responsive and engaging experiences.

Partnership and continuity

We work in close partnership with families to support each child’s individual journey, recognising that every child develops in their own time and in their own way. Learning is guided by the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), with educators observing, responding and extending each child’s development. We also build connections with local schools where appropriate to support familiarity and continuity into the next stage of learning.

Our goal

For every child to feel confident, capable and connected as a learner, with strong foundations that support their ongoing learning journey in school and beyond.
